What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease using natural therapies and gentle techniques. It is based upon the foundation of "Vis medicatrix naturae" or the healing power of nature. The body can heal itself, as when a wound mends on its own. Nature provides healing remedies, such as botanical herbs to facilitate this process. Treatments, supported by scientific research, address the underlying cause of disease rather than simply using a "band-aid" approach to suppress symptoms of the illness. Symptoms are indicators of improper body function, unfavourable diet or lifestyle habits. The role that a Naturopathic Doctor assumes is more of a teacher rather than a healer, which empowers the patient to realize that they create and control their health through both treatment and prevention of disease.

What happens during the first visit?

Prior to the1st visit, the client is requested to fill out an extensive medical history form, and bring it to the initial consult. During the initial consult, the Naturopathic Doctor will review the health history, and discuss concerns and the reason for the visit. In addition, a thorough physical exam is performed and any relevant tests may be prescribed. The Naturopathic Doctor will discuss a time frame for further follow up visits and any homecare needed.

These are used to create individualized treatment protocols that address the root causes of your health problem.
